4 Causes of Asphalt Shingle Rippling

Well-built asphalt shingle roofs have a uniform, flat look; a wavy or rippled appearance indicates a problem. In this blog post, local roofing contractor Shine Construction Inc. takes a look at the causes of asphalt shingle rippling.

  1. Improper re-roofing. Re-roofing is a roofing installation method where the new roof is installed over the old one, primarily to save on labor cost and installation time. This roof installation method has to be done on roofs in a certain condition and it has to be done by a trained roofer. Otherwise, there is a great risk of problems such as trapped moisture under and within the old shingles — rippling happens when trapped moisture migrates to the new asphalt shingles.
  2. Wind damage. High winds can push asphalt shingles out of their original positions and cause rippling. In most cases, roof repair is necessary because when shingles are knocked out of place, parts of the underlayment are exposed, making the roof vulnerable to moisture infiltration. Investing in a roofing system with a high wind rating can help prevent rippling, as well as more severe types of wind damage like torn-off asphalt shingles.
  3. Poor installation. Asphalt shingle roof installation methods may look the same, but they vary depending on factors like the type of asphalt shingles and manufacturer instructions. Roofs installed by those who use just one method for all roofing systems — typical of DIYers and untrained individuals — are at a greater risk of developing problems like rippling asphalt shingles. To prevent such a problem, make sure that you are working with an experienced roofing contractor. It also helps to hire one that’s certified or designated by a roofing manufacturer, as they are more likely to have received product-specific training, as well as coverage for their workmanship.
  4. Factory defects. Rippling on a relatively new asphalt shingle roof is usually caused by a manufacturing defect, specifically due to an imbalance in the asphalt shingle moisture content. Most roofing manufacturers have limited warranties that cover factory defects. It’s important to note that some manufacturer warranties only provide coverage for material replacement, not labor costs, depending on the coverage level.
