Essential Reminders From Roofers Before Adding a Skylight

Skylights are generally a great feature to have in your home, particularly in areas or rooms where there isn’t enough wall space to install a window. However, it’s important to remember that skylights are very different from your typical windows. From installation to maintenance, their requirements are unique and should be properly noted so that you can get the most out of your skylights.

That said, make sure to consult roofing professionals before you begin your skylight installation project. In this article, roof replacement expert Shine Construction Inc. shares some of the top reminders that roofers usually tell homeowners who plan on adding a skylight.

Roof Slopes

Modern skylights are quite versatile when it comes to placement. Whether you need to install them on a flat section of your roof or on a slope, you can rest assured that your roofer can make it happen. It’s even possible to put them in your attic and create a tunnel that can direct sunlight down to ceiling level.

However, take note that the type of skylight you’re going to install will affect installation requirements and the cost of your project. For example, flat roof skylights are generally the easiest to install, so they tend to be the cheapest as well. Meanwhile, slope roof skylights may be more expensive as they may also need additional features for protection.

Lastly, it’s also worth noting that some spots on your roofing simply have a different structure that could make skylight installation more complex. In this case, it’s best to be flexible and talk to your contractor about your plans before making a decision.

Size

Much like in roof replacement, size considerations are also essential in skylight installation. Skylights come in a wide range of sizes. However, your choices may be limited depending on the style of your roof. To give you an idea, residential rooftops commonly have an average truss framing, which can only accommodate a two-foot-wide window section. A bigger skylight may be possible, but your contractor will have to cut into trusses. They may also need to set up additional supports — which can significantly add up to your total expenses. If you’re willing to take on the extra costs, you can have your skylights as wide as four feet and as long as six feet (provided that the right conditions are met). Anything larger than this size can compromise your roof structure.

Placement

The placement of your skylight does not only affect installation requirements; it can also have an impact on your home’s design and indoor comfort. Make sure to work closely with your contractor as they will be able to help you determine the optimal spot for your skylight.

It’s common for skylights to be installed in bathrooms and kitchens. But since these rooms usually generate a lot of moisture, you have to think carefully about your skylight options and consider how such conditions can affect your skylight. Remember that moisture can cloud your skylight and cause excessive condensation or mildew issues. So if these problems are likely to occur, you might have to consider a vented skylight, which can be opened to help get rid of moisture inside your home.

Of course, your skylight should be properly positioned so that it looks good and blends well with the other architectural elements of your home. When done correctly, your skylight can definitely enhance curb appeal.

Sunlight

While you can’t have any control over the sun, there are a few things that you can do to regulate the amount of sunlight and heat that penetrates through your skylight. Take note that skylights on sloping roofs usually get a lot of sunlight, and skylights located on the south side of the roof can potentially overlight your home. To avoid excessive sunlight as well as overheating issues for areas where there are bright sun spots, you can choose among several glazing options that reduce UV light, create a protective barrier against heat or tint the glass to reduce brightness according to your preferences. For large windows, you can also opt to install skylight blinds to protect your interior from too much sunshine.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Skylights can be a bit more vulnerable to the elements due to their location. Roofs usually have to withstand varying amounts of wind, moisture and dust on a daily basis, so your skylight will naturally be subjected to such elements as well. Sometimes high amounts of these elements can create too much stress for the skylight, increasing the possibility of leaks.

Fortunately, you can avoid such problems by picking high-quality materials for your skylight. Ensure properly installed flashing too since this can prevent leaks for several years. Your skylight may also need frequent cleaning, depending on weather conditions in your area. Make sure to have it inspected and cleaned regularly to avoid any buildup of dirt, dust or grime. If there are potential issues with your skylight, have your contractor perform the necessary repair as soon as possible.

It’s best to hire qualified professionals for the maintenance of your skylight. Climbing up on your roof comes with hazards, so you might want to keep yourself safe and leave the job for experts to do. That said, your cleaner should be adequately trained and experienced in cleaning skylights. They should also have good knowledge about roofs so as to prevent any damage to your roofing materials. An error in handling your skylight may not only affect the skylight itself; it can also lead to damaging the shingles, flashing and protective coatings.
